Pastoral care is one of the most important ministries of our church. It's how we respond to the needs and concerns of our congregation every day, and not just on Sundays.
There are phone calls with many pastoral concerns - some want their children baptized, some want to be married, and many call with all the other concerns that we as human beings have.
Other pastoral concerns may be bringing home communion to those that are house bound or in the hospital. It may be going to the hospital and having prayers with someone who is to be operated on; sometimes it's just being present with someone who has suffered a loss, just being quiet to offer the presence of the church by our being there.
Pastorall care is not and should not be looked at as the exclusive ministry of the clergy! Pastoral care is what many of you do and should do by virtue of your Baptism - Pastoral care is the ministry of all the church!
The one sure way, speaking for Fr. Charles and myself, that we can't offer pastoral care is if we don't know - we don't know you have been sick, we don't know that you've been in the hospital, we don't know that you've had a tragedy in your family. We want to serve all of you - but we have to know. |
